about the artist

Sean Thornhill

Based in Cambridgeshire

Sean is an artist and designer based in Cambridgeshire, working from his garden studio. Drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus and Brutalism movements, Sean’s art features a distinctive geometric style that dances with shadows and highlights.

The interplay of daylight on his pieces reveals ever-changing compositions. His signature designed large relief artworks are crafted from layered shapes, designed meticulously on a computer using vector software. Sean creates small-scale prototypes, allowing him to explore the composition in 3D before committing to the final piece. Once he is confident in his design, he produces detailed plan drawings, these are then used as templates for the final art, which he cuts by hand with a craft blade, or a laser-cutter for any intricate shapes to ensure precision. The artwork is then assembled and painted.

Sean also works with print as a medium, again heavily influenced by Scandinavian and mid-century design. By using bold colours and shapes, his screenprints, block prints, and embossed prints create a striking visual impact.

The Own Art Loan Scheme

The Own Art Scheme is an interest-free loan scheme set up by the Arts Council that is designed to make it affordable for everyone to buy original, high quality contemporary art and craft by letting you spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months.

You can choose any work with a retail price between £250 and £25,000 from our great selection of prints, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, glass and wood. It is not possible to buy gift vouchers with the Own Art Scheme.

You can borrow from as little as £250 up to a maximum of £25,000 . We then spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan. For instance, if you buy a painting from us that costs £300 through the own art scheme, you would pay £30 in 10 monthly installments.
