Oliver Hilton

Oliver Hilton has always related to the world around him in an incredibly visual way and drawing and art has been his passion from a very early age and continues to be an integral part of his life.

The influence of Hilton’s surroundings in East Anglia is evident in his work as he takes inspiration from the Fens with their flat coastal plains and large open skies. However, he also draws upon memories of his travels and life experiences, fusing visual memory with interpretation in order to create abstract landscapes and seascapes. His colour palette ranges from bright and energising to subtle and subdued.

The distinctive style of his expressionistic landscapes takes us on a journey through areas of diffused light and shadow, sometimes punctuated with mark making. Hilton prefers to distil what he sees into slabs of colour and shape, simplifying it down to its barest elements. The resulting work is at once invigorating and calming in its effect.

Hilton studied at Newcastle School of Art and Design and now lives and works near Cambridge with his wife and two sons. His work is collected internationally.
