Jo is a visual artist who grew up in London and thrives on the anonymity and comparative privacy that living in a city offers.
In response to her urban surroundings Jo creates hand-pulled solarplate etchings that often focus on a transitory solitary figure. These figures are often lost in their thoughts while observing their own sense of place within the city.
In comparison, Jo’s oil paintings express a romantic, utopian notion of the land. The landscapes are often quiet and devoid of modernity and people. The paintings allow the viewers to reflect, and ultimately accept moments of personal solitude.
Jo’s aim is to encourage those who see her work to look for the unexpected. They might discover text incorporated within a print, or be left intrigued by her use of blended colour which can leave the viewer wondering what lies beyond what is immediately visible.
Jo is captivated by process - either by the layering of oil paint on canvas or by ink and paper through printmaking. Jo's print work focuses on relief solarplate printing. The process of working with this particular printing method fascinates Jo and the results are vibrant and intriguing. Jo’s relief solarplate etchings, in varied editions are unique original hand-pulled prints. Chine Collé, silver or gold leaf or watercolor pencils are often added after the print has been pulled on her hand-built press set within her Cambridge studio.
Originally trained in Furnishing Textiles and Interior Design, in London Jo pursued an alternative career before returning to the arts. Returning from living in the USA for several years Jo embarked on further studies in advanced printmaking at the Curwen Print Study Centre. In 2018 Jo recently extended her studies even further and completed an MA in Printmaking at Anglia Ruskin University, with Distinction.
Alongside her art practice Jo is an Artist Facilitator at Kettle's Yard and works with children in a school or private workshop environment. She acts as a mentor to teenagers studying for GCSE and A level art exams and new artists embarking on their own artistic careers. Jo also occasionally runs corporate and private workshops and individual bespoke oil painting lessons. During the last ten years she has curated and founded exhibitions for other artists - she is one of the three co-founders of the Cambridge Original Printmakers Biennale.
Jo is in demand for commissioned work. For example, many oil paintings and original etchings can be found within Addenbrooke's Hospital. Private works are owned throughout the USA, Canada, Australia, Southern India, Mexico, the Middle East, France and throughout Europe.
Jo's Cambridge Walkabout original solarplate etchings can be found exclusively at Cambridge Contemporary Art.
