Ian McWhinnie was born in 1952 in Glasgow. He graduated from Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art in 1974.
Ian’s subject matter is wide and varied. Recent ideas have been developed from the sea, memories of childhood, Italy, musicians, dancers and circuses (a recurring theme). Ian studied painting at art school and then became an art teacher specialising in ceramics. In 2002 he set up his own studio workshop and began his career as a professional potter making hand-painted, hand-built and wheel thrown pieces. Ian McWhinnie very soon realised that his distinctive designs could be equally successful as paintings in their own right. After some experimentation he decided that oil on board was his preferred medium. Ian McWhinnie has been exhibiting and selling his oil paintings for a relatively short period of time, yet they are already eagerly sought after and have received great critical acclaim.

The Own Art Scheme is an interest-free loan scheme set up by the Arts Council that is designed to make it affordable for everyone to buy original, high quality contemporary art and craft by letting you spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months.
You can choose any work with a retail price between £250 and £25,000 from our great selection of prints, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, glass and wood. It is not possible to buy gift vouchers with the Own Art Scheme.
You can borrow from as little as £250 up to a maximum of £25,000 . We then spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan. For instance, if you buy a painting from us that costs £300 through the own art scheme, you would pay £30 in 10 monthly installments.
