Caroline Cole
Trained as an architect, Caroline Cole is a British, contemporary ceramic artist, living and working in London.
Each of Caroline Cole’s collections is focused on a different shape, evolved from handcrafted, non-circular but symmetrical forms, which are then slip cast to create highly structured but often curvaceous vessels. Many of the moulds that Caroline creates can be cast both ways up, and it is surprising how different each iteration feels.
The geometric patterns applied to each pot evolve from its shape, sometimes following set mathematical progressions or prime numbers, to generate apparent movement and optical illusions as they follow the form. Caroline painstakingly combines rough, underglazed finishes with more traditional matt or polished glazes to add texture. Each piece is handmade with extraordinary precision and can take months to create, as layers of glaze are applied and fired several times, to create depth and intensity of colour.
