artist's story

Susan Abbs

Susan Abbs is a mixed media artist who works with both traditional media and iPad. Originally from Singapore, she has lived in the UK for nearly 30 years. Unlike her usual colourful artworks, her new series is very dark and monochromatic. In 2019, at the cusp of the pandemic, she was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. “The experience was harrowing but no matter how bad and how dark, there was always light.” Her cancer is now in remission and she describes the world is bright and wonderful again. “This series isn’t really about the darkness but the shining light. We can’t see the brightness of light without the contrast of darkness.” A keen urban sketcher, Susan can be seen drawing on location with her iPad. She has exhibited in various exhibitions and galleries, and her work can be found in the Cambridge Art Book.

The Own Art Loan Scheme

The Own Art Scheme is an interest-free loan scheme set up by the Arts Council that is designed to make it affordable for everyone to buy original, high quality contemporary art and craft by letting you spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months.

You can choose any work with a retail price between £250 and £25,000 from our great selection of prints, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, glass and wood. It is not possible to buy gift vouchers with the Own Art Scheme.

You can borrow from as little as £250 up to a maximum of £25,000 . We then spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan. For instance, if you buy a painting from us that costs £300 through the own art scheme, you would pay £30 in 10 monthly installments.
