Laura De Benedetti
Laura’s flowing, free-spirited forms are hand-thrown in porcelain. Her aim is that the shapes give a relaxed informality, but the pieces resilient and hardwearing. Her unique use of crystalline glazes radiate warmth and depth with the glow of the colours of the Mediterranean.
Laura makes in an intuitive manner, letting her inner thoughts and feelings create the forms, so when looking and touching her work you can feel the resonance of her hands on the material. Her work is inspired by the vibrant, subtle colours of the Italian coastline in Liguria where she grew up and by the shapes and motives of the local architecture. The sea and the sky, the sand and the rock, the flashes of colour from cliff-top wild flowers and the mysterious shades of dawn and sunset are reflected in her multi-layered crystalline glazes, which form the signature of my work. Laura lets the mixing and running of the glazes surprise her every time, as they cover the white porcelain and its irregular curves like a sensuous dress.
Laura has exhibited and sold her work with Nicole Farhi, at the National Gallery and V&A shops and at Heal’s where a more domestic look had great success.
