Katie finds herself constantly inspired by the beauty of the natural world and feels most alive when exploring outdoors. Whilst enjoying drawing and painting, she finds that the tactile nature of clay, in particular, keeps her mind whirring with new ideas. Katie’s love of birds and collection of old bird egg identification books prompted her to create the Eggshell collection of earthenware tableware, bud vases and planters. The collection consists of various hand-painted colourways and speckle patterns, such as ‘Goldfinch’, ‘Jackdaw’, ‘Guillemot’, ‘Blue Tit’ and ‘Swallow’.
All of the shapes in the Eggshell collection start life as solid, hand built and carved models made of clay. One or two part plaster moulds are then made of the models to be used for slipcasting – a process involving the use of liquid clay. After the pieces have been cast, and are at the leather hard stage, coloured slip of Katie’s own recipe is brushed onto the pieces in multiple layers before individual bird egg speckle patterns are painted on using underglaze. Following a bisque firing, the pieces are glazed using a slightly matte glaze, developed for a more gentle sheen than a standard transparent glaze.
