Julie Simmonds

Julie studied under the tutelage of Stanley Jones and graduated from The Slade School of Art in 1997. After working in London as a bookbinder she finally settled in Reading where she currently works in separate print and ceramic studios and as part of The Jelly Arts organisation.

Her ceramics collection 'Ischia - a room with a view' is made in collaboration with David Pope, a potter and decorative artist who graduated in printmaking from Kingston University in 1995.

The development of this ceramics collection has evolved through Julie’s response to the drawings and paintings she produced on this little known Mediterranean island. She was drawn to its faded plaster work and jumbled buildings which reminded her of the chaotic and distorted perspectives found within Medieval and Renaissance paintings and stained glass which has greatly influenced this collection.

Through selecting the most interesting aspects from her source material she creates a dynamic conversation between the inside and outside of each ceramic; joyfully playing with colour, mark-making and positive and negative space.

David Pope and Julie Simmonds have been working collaboratively since 2012.
