Jenny Ayrton captures miniature wonderlands in molten glass. She creates stage-sets upon which you may project your own stories. Inspiration comes from often overlooked everyday scenes: a washing line blowing wildly on the first day of spring, a deserted playground, an unknown couple on a park bench, a door ajar giving just a glimpse of what lies within... Many of Jenny's scenes have a domestic twist and are directly influenced by her life as a Devon-based mum; following visits to the towns, beach and moor, she spends relaxed evenings creating tiny wire sketches based on the day's observations.
In the hot-glass workshop, Jenny makes a detailed impression in a tray of sand, into which molten glass is poured at over 1000°C. There is one brief opportunity to carefully add the wire models using just tweezers, a fiddly action, especially when exposed to such heat. A second layer of glass is added, trapping the wire within. The piece is then transferred to a kiln where it cools very slowly. Days later Jenny returns to cold-work each piece; grinding the base, polishing surfaces and engraving details. The unpredictable and uncontrollable flow of the glass brings each scene to life and ensures that every piece is truly unique!
Jenny graduated from Plymouth College of Art in 2012. In 2014 she was selected for the Crafts Council’s prestigious Hothouse 4 programme. Her work has been featured on the cover of Craft & Design magazine, won awards at two London shows, and been selected for the 2015 British Glass Biennale. She is an associate member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. Jenny is happy to work to commission to capture your own special scene.
