Helen is inspired by the natural world, storytelling and illustration. She enjoys muddy adventures in the beautiful Pennine hills where she lives, as well as further afield; often choosing to explore forests, mountains and other wild places. Helen's BA (Hons) in Three Dimensional Design means she has experience of working in many different materials, but her first loves are clay and wood. Helen likes to celebrate the best bits of human nature and often works closely with customers to create pieces that celebrate family events or capture special moments.
The technical bit…
Helen uses 2 different techniques: slip casting and hand building to create forms or sheets of clay that can then be shaped and manipulated to create individual artworks. Her love of the natural world is often represented through her stylised illustrations and designs, which she meticulously draws, hand carves, paints or incises onto and into the basic form she's working with. Helen prefers a matt finish to her work, so many of her pieces are vitrified to maintain the earthiness of the material. Ceramic is central to Helen's practice but she likes to explore other materials and processes, allowing her to develop a wide portfolio of work.
