Kevan Hopson

Kevan Hopson was born in Hertfordshire in 1958.

He graduated with honours in Maths from Bedford College, University of London.

After teaching Maths briefly in two schools in Hertfordshire he moved to Mid Wales to concentrate on his art. He now lives in an isolated cottage with his wife and daughter.

His sculptures are made from driftwood collected from the beaches of mid-Wales. The wood is shaped on its journey down river to the sea. It is further weathered and bleached by the sun after the flood tides leave it stranded at the back of the beach. These textures become the starting point for the sculptures.

He responds to the wood in various ways, sometimes trying to alter it as little as possible, but at other times he is happy to change the surface quite radically. However he works, it is always in a sympathetic way, trying to draw the shapes from the wood.

His work is regularly exhibited both locally and nationally. It was shown internationally when in 1998 he was one of the artists chosen to represent Wales at the Welsh festival in Brussels.
