Clare Curtis

My earliest memories are of Thaxted in Essex where I spent my first few years; but it was in Felixstowe, Suffolk, where I grew up. I left in 1988 to study Illustration and Printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and I graduated in 1991.

From Scotland I moved to London establishing myself as a freelance Illustrator whilst working as an evening class teacher. During this period I worked mainly in cut paper collage and applied my illustration work in many diverse areas within the publishing and design industries. This included magazines, promotional and corporate literature, adult and children's books, greetings cards and an animated title sequence for BBC television.

However, working in London became mainly a matter of surviving, with little room for creativity. So in 1997 I made the decision to return to Suffolk and my chief ambition was to start printmaking again. It was a gradual process of acquiring equipment and learning as I went along but over time relief printmaking has become my main focus.

Today I live by the sea, in the house I grew up in which originally belonged to my grandfather. This is where I work and print. I exhibit my prints all around the UK but also have the pleasure of working with and for individuals who share my enthusiasm for printing.
