Rebecca Barnard

Rebecca Barnard was born in 1961 near Saffron Walden in Essex. From 1982, after a foundation art course, she took the opportunity to go abroad for what was intended to be a gap year, but which turned out to be a five year trip, living and working in both Europe and Australia.

Following her return, she took commissions and eventually returned to art college in 1994 for one year. Since then, she has been developing her work and exhibiting widely.

Rebecca Barnard travels extensively around the country gathering images for painting, but the West Country continues to feature highly. She is primarily an oil painter, but prefers not to make assumptions as to the method used when creating an image, often returning to a range of mixed media if she feels a painting needs it.
Rebecca Barnard's hallmarks are the sense of strong light which runs through her work, and her ability to convey the intrinsic character and atmosphere of a scene through this. The paintings are warm and come from a positive place. For Rebecca, painting places which have happy memories is part of what inspires her to paint them.
