Nigel Swift's mode of working derives directly from his unmediated experience of being outside. He believes in the integrity of his immediate response and strives to capture the sensory nature of his subject.

'I paint and draw in the open air. My work succeeds when I capture the emotional atmosphere present on each occasion. This is only achieved through total absorption in the subject and the action of mark making.'
