John Maddison

John Maddison was born in St Andrews. He studied Art History at Manchester University. After a Ph.D in Architectural History John Maddison worked for the Victorian Society and the National Trust.

Between 1987 and 1992 John Maddison studied painting with Dick Lee, and began to paint full-time in 1992.

His aim is to paint truthfully and without affectation. Still life has been one of his principal subjects because it allows the freedom to compose the picture as he wishes and to make something out of quite ordinary things. His palette is a limited one, partly because he finds it sometimes helpful to have something to work against but it also assists harmony and the manipulation of tone.

John Maddison has exhibited in galleries throughout Britain since 1990 and has pictures in the collections of The National Trust, The Nationwide Buildings Society, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and Norwich School of Art and Design.
