Eleanor Bartleman

Eleanor Bartleman was born in 1956 and brought up in the South West of Scotland. She studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1974-78 and completed post graduate studies in Ceramics in 1979. She has been working as a ceramic artist since 1980.

Her work was originally based on the ancient stories of Reynard the Fox, but since then many sources are taken and developed – myths and legends, medieval art, the Bible, the writings of Gerald of Wales, medieval manuscripts etc. These ideas are taken as a starting point and are developed to make them part of the artist's own mythology.

The pieces are modelled from porcelain, which is stained in various colours. They are decorated with incised patterns and painted with underglaze colours. The pieces are then fired to 1160°C. Transparent glaze is then painted onto details and the work is fired again to 1040°C. After this lustres and metals are applied before the work is fired again to 750°C.

Eleanor has worked in many workshops around the country but is now based in North Devon.
