Adele Thurstan

Adele Thurstan graduated from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire University in 2006 with an MA in Ceramic Design, having previously studied for a BA in Design: Ceramics. She now works from a workshop in Manchester producing small batch collections for exhibition.

Adele is a hand builder and currently works with soft slabs. They are decorated with coloured slips and oxides, which are formed by using hump and press moulds. She fires these to earthenware temperature. She uses clear and coloured glazes and often employs her own ink drawings that have been screenprinted as ceramic enamels as a further layer of decoration. Each piece is unique as Adele draws and paints onto a plaster batt and then transfers this onto clay slabs to be formed. Her work is decorative and alludes to nineteenth-century ornament, rather than a need for functionality.
