Ali Cooper's unique ceramic pieces are all handmade by her in her studio using the finest Australian porcelain. Each piece is bisque fired, glazed with a clear glaze and then fired for a second time to create the pure white translucent finish. Pieces decorated with precious lustres are fired for a third time. Due to the nature of handmade pottery, slight variations do occur. Each glaze batch and kiln firing creates slightly different colour results and shape changes adding to the charm and individuality of handmade pieces. She would describe my pieces as functional, beautiful and feminine, which are strong with a feeling of fragility.
Ali started studying ceramics about twelve years ago taking evening classes at a pottery workshop in Farnham. It was here, with the help of some very talented tutors and an amazing and inspiring space to work that she got the ceramic bug. With no formal qualifications but armed with all she had been taught and maybe a little artistic flare she decided to set up her small studio and started selling her work to select boutiques in Hampshire and Surrey.
All Ali's ceramics are handmade in her studio and her aim is to make unique beautiful pieces that are beautiful yet functional. She loves to work with different mediums but porcelain is her passion. She finds it wonderful to work with and it poses interesting challenges to her as a maker. Its purity and translucency are second to none and it never fails to fascinate and delight her. Ali's work is all about experimentation which in turn helps to keep it fresh and interesting. Her inspiration is drawn from everything around her and she particularly loves vintage fairs and flea markets.
