Hilary Mayo makes collectable hand built ceramic vessels. Hilary works from photographs and memory to produce abstract impressions of her observations and experience. She uses the clay as a canvas, applying multiple layers of glaze with a brush, so each piece is unique.
The geology and landscape of the Suffolk Coast provide the inspiration for Hilary’s new work.
Erosion and fracture are constant themes of this exposed, beguiling landscape - the elements constantly battering, wearing, sculpting. Cliffs crumble into the sea, whilst the ebb and flow of the tide over many millennia soften the edges of sharp rock fragments to form smooth pebbles.
For over 20 years I’ve walked along this coastline collecting materials that catch my eye… shells, soft chalk pebbles, pieces of hard flint, rusted metal, stray grasses and seed pods..
The white hue of this Suffolk series responds to the chalk. Signs of erosion can be seen in meandering rims and indentations, while occasional fractures interrupt the surface, and are a feature of the white dribbled glaze.
My Landscape Vessels continue in this series, the glazes perfectly complimenting the colours found in the chalky covered flint.
